Psalms 29

The Storm

This is a psalm of David.

1Sons of God, say that the LORD is glorious.

Say that the LORD is powerful.
29:1 Verse 1: The sons of God are probably the angels. Angels live in heaven with God.

2Say that the LORD has a glorious name.

Say all this to the LORD that is beautiful and holy.
29:2 Verse 2: Our translation says that the LORD is beautiful and holy. It is possible that the Hebrew means that the angels in heaven are wearing beautiful clothes.

3The voice of the LORD is on the waters.

The glorious God is thundering.

The LORD is on the great waters.
29:3 Verse 3: The waters is another word for the sea, probably the Mediterranean Sea.

4The voice of the LORD is powerful.

The voice of the LORD is beautiful.

5The voice of the LORD breaks the cedar trees.

The LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
29:5 Verse 5: Lebanon was famous for cedar trees. They were very big trees. Solomon (a son of David) used cedar wood from Lebanon when he built the temple in Jerusalem.

6He makes Lebanon jump like a young cow

and Sirion like a young wild animal.
29:6 Verse 6: Lebanon and Sirion mean the mountains in these places. In the storm, David thought that they were moving around. Perhaps there was an earthquake. In an earthquake the ground moves.

7The voice of the LORD makes fire in the sky.

8The voice of the LORD makes the desert move,

the LORD makes the desert of Kadesh move.

9The voice of the LORD blows strongly on the trees

and he blows everything from the forest.

But in his temple, everyone says that he is glorious.
29:9 Verse 9: We are not sure how to translate ‘blows strongly on the trees.’ Some people say it is better to translate it ‘makes the animals have their babies.’ The storm was so bad that the animals were afraid. The ones that were going to have baby animals had them early. The temple here means heaven. Everyone means the sons of God that are in verse 1

10The LORD was king at the time of the Flood.

The LORD will always be king.
29:10 Verse 10: We have spelled Flood with a capital f. This is because it means one special flood. It happened in the time of Noah. Water covered the whole earth. Everybody died except Noah and his family. We know that David meant this Flood because he used the special word that describes the Flood in Genesis. Nobody else uses it in the whole Bible.

11The LORD will make his people strong.

The LORD will give his people peace.
29:11 Verse 11: After the storm, there was peace. Peace is a gift that God gives to his people. Peace means no loud noises or fighting round us. The peace of God means that there is nothing bad inside us. We are happy deep inside us.
